    Jal Jivan Mission

    JalJeevan Mission is to assist, empower and facilitate:

    • Planning of participatory rural water supply strategy for ensuring potable drinking water security on a long-term basis to every rural household and public institution, viz. GP building, School, Anganwadi centre, Health centre, wellness centres, etc.
    • Create a water supply infrastructure so that every rural household has a Functional Tap Connection (FHTC) and water in an adequate quantity of prescribed quality is made available on a regular basis.
    • To plan for their drinking water security
    • GPs/ rural communities to plan, implement, manage, own, operate and maintain their in-village water supply systems
    • Capacity building of the stakeholders and create awareness in the community on the significance of water for improvement in the quality of life
    • The National Rural Drinking Water Program awarded by the Central Government since the year 2009-10 has been restructured and included in the JalJeevan Mission from 30 June 2020.  According to this, water will be provided to all households in rural areas as “HarGharNal Se Jal” (FHTC Functional Tap Connection) by 2025.
    • Government is committed to supply, The JalJeevan Mission aims to provide at least 55 liters of quality water per day per person through individual tap connections to every household in the rural areas of the district by the year 2025. The plan will be designed according to the population of the next 30 years.

    Objectives

    The broad objectives of the Mission are:

    • To provide FHTC to every rural household.
    • To prioritize the provision of FHTCs in quality-affected areas, villages in drought-prone and desert areas, SansadAdarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) villages, etc.
    • To provide functional tap connections to the Schools, Anganwadi centres, GP buildings, Health centres, wellness centres, and community buildings
    • To monitor the functionality of tap connections.
    • To assist in ensuring the sustainability of the water supply system, i.e., the water source, the water supply infrastructure, and the funds for regular O&M

     Highlights of the Schemes from the Department

    • 55-liter water supply to all households through functional tap connections, and availability of clean and adequate water in public places (college, anganwadi, health center).
    • 50 per cent central and 50 per cent state government financial responsibility.
    • 10 percent Lokvargani Gram Panchayats for the maintenance and repair of schemes.
    • Incorporation of Reintegration Individual Village Schemes and Regional Water Supply Schemes.
    • Taking necessary measures for the sustainability of water supply generation, like borewell recharge structures, rooftop rainwater harvesting, etc.
    • After implementation of the scheme, the ownership of the scheme will remain with the Village Water Supply and Sanitation Committee/for further maintenance and repairs.

     

    Components under JJM

    The following components are supported under JJM

    Efforts should be made to source funds from different sources/ programmes, and convergence is the key

    • Development of in-village piped water supply infrastructure to provide tap water connection to every rural household
    • Development of reliable drinking water sources and/ or augmentation of existing sources to provide long-term sustainability of the water supply system
    • Wherever necessary, bulk water transfer, treatment plants, and a distribution network to cater to every rural household
    • Technological interventions for the removal of contaminants where water quality is an issue
    • Retrofitting of completed and ongoing schemes to provide FHTCs at the minimum service level of 55 lpcd;
    • Greywater management
    • Support activities include IEC, HRD, training, utility development, water quality laboratories, water quality testing and surveillance, R&D, a knowledge centre, community capacity building, etc.
