Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani
Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani, known as the paradise of Maharashtra, is a picturesque area. It consists of two parts: Old Mahabaleshwar and New Mahabaleshwar, separated by Brahmaranya in the middle with a distance of 5 km between them.
Mahabaleshwar
Mahabaleshwar is a cool climate location and an important tourist center situated at an altitude of 1372 meters above sea level. Five rivers—Krishna, Venna, Koyna, Savitri, and Gayatri—originate from here, and there is a temple dedicated to these rivers known as the Panchganga temple. The Venna Lake offers boating facilities. The forest department organizes nature excursions for tourists. The Mahabaleshwar Temple was built in the 13th century by the Yadav king. Points of interest include Wilson Point, Makarand Point, Kates Point, Echo Point, Arthur Seat Point, Widow Point, Castle Rock, Savitri Point, Marjorie Point, Elphinstone Point, Connaught Peak, Hunters Point, Northcote Point, Lodwick Point, Bombay Point, Elephant’s Head Point, and Chinaman Waterfall. Mahabaleshwar is considered a beautiful dream of the goddess of nature. Honey and various types of honey products are available at the Madhu Sagar Bee Center. Close to Wilson Point, there is a wheat rust research center. Various fruits like strawberries, raspberries, mulberries, and jamun are produced in Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani.

Kshetra Mahabaleshwar
Also known as Dhom Mahabaleshwar, it has an ancient Hemadpanti Shiva Temple on a cliff. Due to the Krishna idol placed in it, it’s also called Krishnabai Temple. This area has two large Shiva temples—Atimahabaleshwar and Mahabaleshwar. These Hemadpanti temples were built by the Yadav dynasty in 1215. Near these temples, Chandrarao More built the Panchganga Temple, from where five rivers—Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri, and Gayatri—originate. This makes the area a pilgrimage site. After a pilgrimage in 1644, Saint Ramdas Swami first came here and started preaching. He also built the first Hanuman Temple here.
Wilson Point
The highest and important point in Mahabaleshwar, Wilson Point has three towers. From the first tower, you can see the Polo Ground, Makarandgad, and Koyna Valley. The second tower offers a stunning sunrise view. From the third tower, you can see Kshetra Mahabaleshwar, Elphinstone Point, Connaught Point, the village of Ranjanwadi, and the Venna River Valley.
Bombay Point
Located near the old Mumbai road, it’s named Bombay Point. It’s a favorite among tourists for its sunset view, and it’s also known as Sunset Point. The shape of the sun changes as it sets, appearing oval, pot-like, square, or kite-shaped.
Elephant’s Head Point
Located 6 km away, it’s the westernmost tip of the mountain range with a width of 3.7 meters and a depth of about 800 meters down to the Koyna Valley. It resembles an elephant’s head and trunk. From this point, you can see Pratapgad clearly and the dense forest of Jawali.
Arthur Seat and Widow Point
Arthur Seat is the most scenic point on Mahabaleshwar’s cliffs. Named after Arthur Malet, it offers views of Savitri Valley on the left and the dense forest of Jor Valley on the right. You can see distant mountain peaks like Torna, Raigad, and Kangar. Below Arthur Seat, there’s Widow Point with a natural window-like rock formation offering breathtaking views.
Venna Lake and Pratap Singh Garden
Venna Lake, formed by the damming of Venna River, offers boating and horse riding. Behind the lake is a dense forest. Pratap Singh Garden, located nearby, has many beautiful flower plants and trees.

Panchgani
Panchgani, named after the five hills it sits on, is known for its healthful climate. Tourists are attracted to the Table Land and Kids Park. It’s also home to the Moral Rearmament Center and Mapro Fruit Products. Panchgani is famous for strawberry production.
Pratapgad
Situated 20 km from Mahabaleshwar on the Mahabaleshwar-Mahad road, Pratapgad was built by Moropant Pingle in 1657. It has a stone temple of Goddess Bhavani in the center. Nearby is Kedareswar Temple with historical remnants of Jijamata Wada and Shivaji Maharaj’s throne. Pratapgad is also known for the historic meeting between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan in 1659.
Makrandgad
Also known as Saddle Bank, it links Vasota and Pratapgad. Built by Shivaji Maharaj around 1656, it offers views of Mahabaleshwar on one side and the Konkan coast on the other. The fort is surrounded by dense forests and is home to the Mallikarjun Shankar Temple.
Kenjalgad
This fort was built by King Bhoj in the 12th century. On the fort, there’s an ancient Mahadev and Devi temple in ruins. From here, you can see Pandavgad, Kamalgad, Raireshwar Plateau, Chandan Vandan, and Dhom Dam.
Malas Food Products
Located in Bhoshe village, Malas Food Products produces various fruit jams, jellies, marmalades, crushes, and syrups. Honey is also available.
Mapro Food Products
Located in Gureghar, this jam factory is spread over 8 acres. It has a greenhouse with hundreds of cactus varieties and various ornamental plants.

Wathar railway station, located about 60 km away from Mahabaleshwar, is the closest railhead serving this lovely hill station. However, several trains run from Pune and Mumbai to Wathar. Another convenient option is Pune railway station, which enjoys excellent connectivity with the rest of the country. Buses and prepaid taxis are easily available from these railway stations for Mahabaleshwar.
