    Khandala Taluka

Khandala – Although the main place of Khandala taluka is Hari Pargaon-Khandala, Shirwal is an important village in this taluka. Shirwal is situated on the banks of the Nira River. Shivaji Maharaj initially captured the forts and territories in this region to establish the Swarajya. In this village, situated on the south bank of the Nira River, there is a fort called Subhanmangal Fort. This fort is not very tall or extensive. It has an earthen rampart around it. However, today, the fort is dilapidated, with very little to see. It is short in height but neat in structure. The earthen ramparts around the fort can still be seen.

Naigaon – Naigaon is located 5 km north of Shirwal. It is the birthplace of Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule, the pioneering woman educator and revered wife of the great social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. A national memorial has been built at the site of her residence. A half-statue of Savitribai has been erected, and a grand old-style wada has been constructed. Her birth anniversary is celebrated here, and a women’s teacher training institute has also been started.
